    An American crocodile and American alligator share the same southern Florida wetland habitat.

     There is one place where the answer is surprisingly simple.

    Yes.

    In southern Florida, American crocodiles and American alligators live in the same wild landscape.

    That does not mean they spend their days swimming side by side.

    They are different animals with different preferences. Alligators are more closely associated with freshwater marshes, ponds and rivers, while American crocodiles are especially comfortable in coastal and brackish habitats. But in southern Florida, those habitats overlap. It is the only place in the world where the American alligator and American crocodile naturally occur together.

    So yes, a crocodile can encounter an alligator.

    It can happen in the Everglades, in mangrove wetlands, and in other parts of southern Florida where their ranges meet.
