     Look at an old medieval street and one thing becomes immediately obvious.

    There was not much space.

    Houses stand close to one another, sometimes with only a narrow passage between them. Upper floors may project over the street, making the buildings appear even more crowded. In some towns, the houses seem to press inward from both sides until very little sky remains overhead.

    It can look uncomfortable.

    Why didn't people simply leave more space between their homes?
